Rockstar – The Dirty Picture

Today it was a Bollywood day. First I had a date with Jordan and later with Silk n now it’s time to punch in my viewpoints in my diary about both these characters and films as whole.

Rockstar :

Rockstar released quiet some time back and I hadn’t seen it but it was always there on my watch list solely because of the Rockstar aka Ranbir Kapoor. I have always liked him, his persona, his Casanova image, his films, etc. etc. etc. To me he is the hottest thing in Bollywood at the moment and in due time he will give Khans (who have ruled the Bollywood since edges now) run for their money. I have liked most of his movies (except “Anjana Anjani”) and “Rockstar” was no exception. Rockstar is a story of a character named “Janardhan Jakhar” aka JORDAN who always wanted to be a big name in Music world. The first half of the movie has been superbly made. First half itself was kind of “Paisa Wasool” according to me. Whatever “Junglee Jawani” or bewdagiri everything looked entertaining n gripping. Though whatever little Kashmir has been shown was really exotic.

But second half was kind of disappointing. It was bit difficult to digest how the sweet boy (who was interested only in playing his “Tun Tuna” i.e. Guitar Smile ) suddenly turned into maniac lover and psychopath. The end of the movie was very illogical (I term it as illogical because it is my expectation that all Bollywood movies should have happy lovey dovey kinda end Smile) Also, too many heavy duty songs were put in second half. Instead of songs, I would have preferred some story.

Ranbir as usual is excellent in the movie. To me he fully did justice to the demanding role he got. He perfectly brought out the Rockstarish attitude in his look, expressions n acting.  Only time I felt he failed miserably was when he tried to imitate Shammi Kapoor in one of the song in movie. Also, it was bit emotional to see Shammiji last time on screen. Such an amazing actor he was.

Imtiaz Ali as a director got a novel story and did justice with the story by n large. A R Rehman has done wonderful work on music front. I think he is a gifted musician India has got n he is altogether in different orbit. Movie after movie he comes out with master pieces. In this movie also “Katiya karu….” n “Phir se ud chala….” songs are just  Amaazzingggggg….(in both music and picturisation point of view) Just an advice for the lyricist Irshad Kamil. Please write your songs which common man also can understand. You could be gifted writer with immense control on words but too much poetry n urdu in each song makes it bit difficult for common man to understand. By writing such difficult to understand songs you can show your creative geniusness and satisfy poet inside you but don’t forget masses still like n appreciate crap like “Kolavari” Smile Some wording are so difficult that I had to google them.

The biggest disappointment in movie to me was Nargis Fakhri. Sorry babe but you scored almost zero according to me. Acting was sub standard, look wise also nothing great except you are appreciator of white skin. It was good that Director got her voice dubbed by someone else otherwise it would have been disaster. I really wonder what was in Imtiaz Ali’s mind while deciding to cast 32 year old girl (or should I say woman) in the lead role which demanded freshness. Infect, I liked that sidekick tv reporter in the movie better than Ms. Fakhri.

All n all, Rockstar was definitely kinda watchable movie. For those who are fan of Ranbir, you can’t miss this one for sure. By writing “I LOVE JORDAN”, I just end here.

The Dirty Picture :

The Dirty Picture was kinda  most awaiting movie of the year. The reason was simple : people still try to sell sex on the name of boldness/art/freedom of expression and you agree it or not, you except it or not, Sex still gets sold. However, I had a different mindset while going for this movie. I had this VB’s punch line “फ़िल्मे चलती है सिर्फ और सिर्फ तीन चीजो से और वो है Entertainment… Entertainment.. और Entertainment से” in my mind while deciding to go for this movie.

Like Rockstar the first half of the movie was very very very entertaining. Our desi public was kind of jumping and screaming on their seats in Singapore theatre which says all how good it was. One scene in the beginning was very funny in which villain throws two coins in air and fires two rounds from gun to hit those coins. In response, hero throws 1000 INR bill in air and fires a bullet which causes rain of coins on the villain. The scene was so terrific that it caused laugh riot in theatre. Dialog like सुना है तुजे होली खेलने का बहोत शोख है पर तेरी पिचकारीमें दम नहीं है though suggestive yet entertaining in the context of the scene. Film starts with catchy tamil tune of something like आ रा रा नागमुका नागमुका नागमुका n entertainment soars up perfectly with song उ..ला…ला…उ..ला..ला… Dialogs were also funny if you have appetite to digest suggestive content. All n all full to tabla tod Paisa Wasool kind of first half.

But towards the end of first half entertainment dries out. In second half it looked more like melodramatic typical Bollywood with story focusing on depicting the downfall of Silk. Entertainment totally dried up in second half in doing the justice with the real life story of actress Silk Smitha based on whom this movie has been made. In second half, film was on similar line like the movie “Fashion” however in different way.

The most interesting factor in the movie was the oomph factor of Vidya Balan. She had done full justice to her role. I think she took very bold step in accepting such roles and challenging herself with such demanding role. In our society where morale policing still rules, taking such step was very courageous on her part. VB has tried to look her erotic best by showing enough cleavages in almost each scene of movie. But I think her body is not in perfect shape to get people crazy on her. In some scenes she looks very fatso n kind of ugly. I was wondering while industry is breeding with hot females who is ready to go to any extent in order to grab limelight why Balaji opted for not so seductress VB but then I realized that even Silk Smitha the person on which this film has been based was also on bit healthier side. There is a dialog in movie that “अगर फल बडा  हो तो वो मीठा ही होग वो जरूरी नहीं होता” n I had similar kind of feeling seeing VB in some scenes. In the second half of the movie even the face of VB looks swollen n I don’t know whether it was part of showing the ill effects of her alcoholic habits on her face or something was indeed wrong with her face while shooting.

Imran Hasmi n Tushaar Kapoor both had pretty ordinary roles or kind of supporting roles in movie. Imran still manages to get some kissing n managed to keep his track record intact.

On music part, songs उ..ला…ला…उ..ला..ला… & इश्क सूफीआना…. are good.

Now let me put my view about morale policing and all the debate of right/wrong thing related to this movie in my perspective. Though nothing shown open/nude, no bed scenes, no deep kissing scenes in the movie, still this movie can’t be seen along with family. The reason being few suggestive dialogs, Cleavage show of VB and showing of continuous consumption of Alcohol n Cigarette on screen (if you get offended with it then). Lines have been crossed marginally in the movie otherwise movie is very much like other typical Bollywood movies. Now question is whether such movies should be made or not? To me the answer is such movies are being made because it sells. So if things doesn’t go beyond certain limits and movie has entertainment value then personally I’m ok with such movies. I’m against Sunny Leone’s pole dance in Bigg Boss because the platform of tv is different than movie. If something is on TV, it is in your drawing room while in case of movie it is your choice whether you are desperate enough to come out of your home and spend 100+ bucks for the entertainment. Hence, in case of movie, you are making a conscious decision on your behalf about what kind of entertainment you want for yourself. So this is my personal opinion on this matter however far reaching social impacts of such movies on our society is altogether a deep subject.

All n all this movie is kind of watchable not from the oomph factor point of view but from it’s entertainment value of first half.

Desi Boyz :

Ultimate crap. Except John’s biceps nothing is there in movie to see not even Deepika/Chitrangada. Don’t waste your hard earned money on this crappy stuff.
