IPL Auctions 2011

Today auction for the cricketers from across the world went under the hammer for the cash rich Indian Premier League’s 4th season. Around 350+ players were there on the selling list and amount of around 90 million USD were there to be spent by the team owners. When so much of wealth is involved (and that too playing for just 4 weeks), obviously players must be praying hard to god to get the maximum pie from this bounty. At the end of the day 1 of auctions, some prayers got answered while some did not. Here, I just put in my views on the auctions that took place today.

  • Gautam Gambhir emerged as the most prized player from today’s auction with a prize tag of 2.4 million. His new owner will be SRK’s KKR. May not be the best team to get into considering the showing n controversies KKR attracted in first 3 seasons but who cares when your pocket is stuffed with loads of money. Gautam Gambhir must be sad when his previous owner Delhi Daredevils didn’t opt to retain him. But now he must not have any regrets with the kind of prize he has got for seasons to come. I would say “Blessing in disguise”. But considering Gambhir’s showing in first three IPL seasons, this prize is not justified.
  • Pathan bros got really got good deals. Perhaps they also might not have expected such bumper selling from them. Big bro Yusuff went for 2.1 million USD and younger bro went for 1.8 million. I’m specially happy for the younger bro. I think he needs to be in Indian side as an all rounder. He needs to work harder and make his way back into the current Indian side as an all rounder.
  • Robin Uthappa bought by Pune for 2.1 million USD and Rohit Sharma bought by MI for 2 million USD. I think costly gamble by team owners. According to me, both these players doesn’t deserve such a big bounty. Both these players had generous showing in previous three seasons but according to their current form they don’t deserve such pricing.
  • Saurabh Tiwary was surprise package of the auction. He himself would not have expected a price tag of 1.6 million USD for himself. He is upcoming talent and hope he will justify his pricing through his performance in coming seasons.
  • Yuvi’s price tag of 1.8 million USD I think is justified. He is amazing and very capable player in shorter form of game. But his attitude is big problem. Hope he can control his attitude and play well for his new owner and team India.
  • Some players got the pricing which was indeed ridiculous. Seeing their pricing I can say only one thing : खुदा महेरबान तो गधा पहेलवान.
    1. Mahela Jayawardane – 1.5 M USD (this old horse should not have been even sold at first place)
    2. Muarlitharan – 1.1 M USD (again I think very exorbitant price for the chucker)
    3. Angelo Mathews – 950 K USD (well, pure gamble)
    4. Ravindra Jadeja – 950K USD (pure blunder. This guy can’t bowl, can’t bet but still fetched close to 1 Million)
    5. Dinesh Karthik – 900 K USD (why? this guy is the most over rated player. Despite of getting plenty of chances he has proved his dumbness while batting or doing keeping time and again. Adam Gilchrist also sold at the same price. I think in this case it’s insult of Gilchrist)
  • It was heartening for me to see that Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman got their buyers. Though they didn’t got amazing deals but I would say considering their T20 format record they got decent deals.
  • Some of the notables couldn’t make it to the next seasons of the IPL bus. Sourav Ganguly was the most prominent name in this list. When person doesn’t retire gracefully he has to face humiliation and people make to retire him forcefully. Sourav couldn’t understand this simple fact and forcibly tried to prolong his career and ultimately he was thrown out. He was good captain and batsman in his prime but no more now. Hope he had accepted this fact. Brian Lara was also another prominent player who couldn’t make it. Lara hanged his boot long ago and now he is trying to make come back but no team owner is convinced about his success in his come back attempt. Chris Gayle also remained unsold. That’s mystery for me. I mean he is still playing for WI at highest level and he is one of the most destructive batsman and kinda perfect bet for T20 format. Graeme Swann & James Anderson who did the good showing in recent Ashes series were also left out. I think it might be because the nakharas of the British player. Smile Anyways, still one more round of auction left tomorrow and hope some of them can get their buyers tomorrow.

Though I’m not big fan of IPL but all this vulgar show of money can not remain unnoticed. IPL is a decay that has entered in Indian cricket three years back and my worry is too much of money will kill the cricket n cricketers of India. Too much of anything is not good be it goodness or badness.
